LockDown Browser for Mac now requires that System Integrity Protection (SIP) be fully enabled to ensure exam integrity. If the student does not have SIP enabled when the exam starts in LockDown Browser, they will encounter one of two messages (depending on the version of CMAC they’re using) and LockDown Browser will terminate. Those messages are:
"LockDown Browser is shutting down because System Integrity Protection (SIP) is disabled."
"LockDown Browser has detected an insecure test environment and will now exit."
When this event occurs, instructors will see this message appear in the LockDown Browser Dashboard Tool:
"This exam was terminated because an insecure test environment has been detected."
To check the status of System Integrity Protection on your device, perform the following steps:
- Open Terminal.app from /Applications/Utilities
- Type “csrutil status” and hit the return key
If SIP is fully enabled, the output will read: “System Integrity Protection status: enabled.”
If the status is instead “disabled” or “unknown”, you will not be able to use LockDown Browser for Mac to take assessments until SIP has been re-enabled.
Please see the following Apple support article for instructions on re-enabling SIP: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/security/disabling-and-enabling-system-integrity-protection#Enable-System-Integrity-Protection.
