If you use the LockDown Browser iPad app, you may occasionally see grey shapes on your screen. Example:
These shapes are caused by a Guided Access security feature that permits a user to designate areas of the screen that they want to block from being accessed. Any area on the screen where the dark grey shape appears is rendered temporarily disabled to your touch.
With the release of version 5.0 of LockDown Browser for iPad, Guided Access is no longer needed, and so this problem can be avoided completely by upgrading. We recommend you visit the Apple Store and download version 5.0. You also might desire to disable Guided Access if you do not use that functionality for any other apps. Until you upgrade to version 5.0, the only workaround is found below.
If you open Guided Access and look at the bottom of the screen, you'll see some controls such as "hardware buttons," "touch" and "time limit." Additionally, in the center of the screen near the bottom is the phrase "circle areas on the screen you would like to disable." This is the security feature causing the shapes.
If you then drag your finger across the blue screen area, this creates grey streaks that will carry over into your LockDown Browser session if you don't remove them.
To remove these grey shapes, please follow these steps:
1) Open the LockDown Browser iPad app to your Learning Management System's login page.
2) Triple click the Home Button 3x in a row to trigger an exit from Guided Access.
3) Enter your GA password, if prompted. Your password may have fewer/more characters, depending on your Guided Access password settings.
4) Each grey shape will have an "X" in a circle. Press this "X" to remove the grey streak from the screen. Afterwards, press "Resume" in the upper right hand of the screen. This should take you back to the LMS login page, and the grey streaks should be gone.
